We send our greetings to you, our fellow members and activists.
I know we have been silent to all of you during these troubled and life changing times. This is not because we have been idle. Climate Change has not slowed during the Covid 19 pandemic. In fact, many of the biggest contributors towards making our planet uninhabitable have taken these times of uncertainty and used them against us.
We do have sad news. Mel Strawn, our founder of 350 Central Colorado, passed last month. Mel was 91 and had been strong and in good health continuing to participate in our community right up until his final and short illness.
I was asked to write an article about Mel’s leadership and activism in 350 Central Colorado for Colorado Central Magazine. We hope you subscribe to Colorado Central Magazine. If you don’t the article is included as an attachment (without the great photos of Mel)
Mel Strawn Founder 350 Central Colorado
For more than a year groups were working to create a new proposition for the coming election that once again would attempt to push fracking back 2500’ from schools, homes and waterways. When the virus struck it removed the ability for petition gatherers to go into the public and physically gather the 150 to 200 thousand signatures needed to get the proposition on the ballot. These organizations then bowed out. Governor Polis made a proclamation that signatures could be gathered electronically. So, 350 Colorado Action led by our Micah Parkin leaped into the activist gap and we determined we could get the signatures by the beginning of August. The organizing, the fundraising and team building were incredible. We could actually pull this off. Then the Colorado Supreme Court, a very pro fracking court put mostly in place by Mr. Frackenlooper himself, ruled against Governor Polis, overturning his decision to allow electronic signature gathering and stopping us cold. 350 Colorado Action will be ready to continue this in the next election cycle.
On a more local level the virus struck as 350 Central Colorado was well into planning and organizing Our Mother Earth Festival and the Parade for Our Species to take place in early May. As you probably already know we had to cancel it all as every other organizer of festivals and parades has had to do to save lives. We were hoping to hold our festival this September but that is now out of the question. We look forward and hopeful to next year for a strong and vibrant festival.
Our 350 Central Colorado Leadership team has been working hard, meeting repeatedly on Zoom to move forward. The following is a letter you probably have already received from our leading member Dr. Cindy Parker:
Hello to Each of You Wonderful Members and Supporters!
I hope you are well and thriving as best as possible.

Thank you! The 350 CC Leadership hope you will stay engaged with climate activities locally as well as nationally.
Take good care during these worrisome times,
350 Central Colorado is holding a Climate Leadership Workshop via Zoom.
Join us for this Climate Leadership workshop on Wednesday July 29th 2020 from 1-3:30pm
You might be wondering how do I fit in the climate movement? In Colorado, we’ve seen the fossil fuel industry ignore public health and safety and site fracking, coal plants and oil refineries right by our neighborhoods, endangering our loved ones’ health, safety and futures. This must end now. Together we can stand up for the people and places we love. We can grow our skills and our movement to create the change we need at home and at the national level.
Join us for this free workshop and find out how you can get involved in the climate movement in Colorado. This will be an excellent opportunity to skill up and learn how to organize within a multi-generational movement. This workshop will use interactive activities and multimedia to teach you skills you can use in organizing, movement building and shutting down the fossil fuel industry.
Then find out how you can get involved volunteering with our Central Colorado Team in the Coaldale/Salida area!

Our organization firmly believes fighting for Social Justice is a major factor when fighting Climate Change. On Wednesday June 10 and Friday June 12 we made this belief perfectly clear through Salida’s own Mountain Mail
350 Central Colorado leadership along with 350 Colorado Staff will be forming a hiring committee for a paid part time position as 350 Central Colorado Team Coordinator/ Organizer. We will be using existing 350CC funds with 350 Colorado matching funds and there will be a fall fundraiser to help all the 350 Colorado Teams towards financing Team Organizers.
Well this is all for now folks. Please participate as you can and donate as you can also. If you can donate please send us a check at PO Box 147, Coaldale CO 81222 Please make the check out to 350 Colorado with 350 Central Colorado written in the memo line.
