At the Fremont County Democratic Central Committee Meeting on June 12, Robert Parker presented a letter proposing it be sent to the DNC. The Central Committee enthusiastically and unanimously voted to support and send the letter FedEx to Mr. Perez and the DNC. Here is the letter:
Greetings Mr. Perez and the DNC:
We are the Fremont County Democrats of Colorado.
We are asking, no demanding, that you change your decision and allow a Debate on Climate Change for the 2020 Presidential Candidates.
We quote Greta Thunberg here, the 16 year old Swedish Climate Activist: “The future of all coming generations rests on your shoulders. What you do now, we children can’t undo in the future. So please, treat the crisis as the crisis it is and give us a future.”
Yes, we are in a Climate Crisis exponentially sliding into Climate Chaos, a disaster of proportions never seen before by the Human Race. A disaster so all-encompassing our entire civilization and species may very well not survive.
Democrats from across the Nation are suggesting, telling and demanding in the strongest terms for the DNC to hold a Climate Change Debate. Several Presidential Candidates including Governor Jay Inslee, Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand and Michael Bennet; ex-Obama cabinet secretary Julián Castro; and former Representative Beto O’Rourke have called for this debate.
As of today CREDO Action, the Sunrise Movement, Friends of the Earth Action, Public Citizen, 350 Action, Youth Climate Strike, Daily Kos, Sierra Club, The Women’s March organization, Climate Hawks Vote, Greenpeace and Move On, to give you a partial listing, have all called on you to change your decision with several circulating petitions and many folks signing their declaration stating they want this debate. MoveOn’s petition alone is fast approaching 100,000 signatures. Even before Mr. Perez’s latest comments, 53 of the DNC’s voting members — a group that includes nine state party chairpersons — sent the DNC Chair a resolution to force the DNC to host a climate-specific presidential debate.
The Sierra Club tweeted: “This is a deeply disappointing decision. Democratic candidates are offering strong, bold climate plans that contrast sharply with Trump’s inaction & the public deserves to hear them discussed in depth. We urge @DNC to reconsider.”
The Women’s March organization, which mobilized massive women’s rights rallies nationwide after President Trump’s inauguration, chimed in with its disappointment.
“We are one of many organizations that called on the @DNC to hold a #ClimateDebate,” the group tweeted. “The decision against a climate debate is a decision to de-prioritize THE urgent issue that will impact generations to come.”
“We hope that all candidates, especially those who joined us in calling for a #ClimateDebate, will speak out against this disastrous decision and demand @DNC reconsider,” the Sunrise Movement tweeted.
“The longer I think about @DNC insisting no-one hold a climate debate, the sillier it seems,” Bill McKibben, the influential environmental writer and activist, tweeted on Sunday. “We’ve literally never talked about this issue in a presidential debate, and we literally have to deal with it immediately. I don’t understand why we shouldn’t devote a night to it.”
Once more we quote Greta Thunberg: “You lied to us. You gave us false hope. You told us that the future was something to look forward to. And the saddest thing is that most children are not even aware of the fate that awaits us. We will not understand it until it’s too late. And yet we are the lucky ones. Those who will be affected the hardest are already suffering the consequences. But their voices are not heard…. You don’t listen to the science because you are only interested in solutions that will enable you to carry on like before. Like now. And those answers don’t exist anymore. Because you did not act in time.”
The entire country, as poll after poll shows vast percentages of our population believing Climate Chaos is either the most important issue of our time or one of the most important issues, wants to know just how our candidates plan to address this existential challenge.
We Fremont County Democrats, representing more than 6,000 registered Dems, now raise our voice. Let there be a Debate exclusively focused on Climate.
The Fremont Dems Executive Committee and by unanimous consent the Fremont County Dems Central Committee
“I don’t want you to feel hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act.” Greta Thunberg
